The Fight for Pay Equity Goes On

Action Alerts

Hadassah Members, Associates, and supporters were among thousands of Americans who made phone calls and sent letters about the Paycheck Fairness Act. These efforts helped garner several new co-sponsors, but ultimately the bill fell short of the necessary 60 votes to overcome a filibuster. On a party-line vote, 52 Senators voted for cloture (allowing the bill to proceed), while 47 opposed it.

In the wake of this disappointing vote, now is the time to make your voice heard! Visit the Hadassah National Action Center to find out how your Senators voted and register your support or disapproval. Opponents need to hear that women can't afford unequal pay and that common-sense bills like the Paycheck Fairness Act are crucial to closing the wage gap. Also, please take the time to thank the bill's supporters for their continued leadership, which has been critical to getting pay equity the attention it deserves.

2012 marks nearly 50 years since the passage of the Equal Pay Act, and yet for every dollar a man earns, women with comparable education and experience make only 77 cents—costing the average American woman $700,000 to $2 million in lost wages over a working lifetime.

This vote may be over, but the fight wages on. America's women are worth more and they deserve better. Continue to share information about the Paycheck Fairness Act with friends and family, in Hadassah bulletins, letters to the editor and via social media.
