Women's Rights Update

Action Alerts

Today is the first ever United Nations International Day of the Girl Child. Michelle Bachelet, the Executive Director of UN Women (the United Nations entity for gender equality and the empowerment of women), pledged that UN Women will work with governments and other partners to advance girls' education, health and well-being in order to attain a world where girls can live free from fear, violence and discrimination. Click here to watch Bachelet's speech and learn more about International Day of the Girl Child.

In honor of International Day of the Girl Child, learn about some key women's rights updates and make your voice heard, via the Hadassah National Action Center.

The United States remains one of only six countries that have not ratified the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). It is time for the U.S. government to show the international community that it stands unequivocally for the rights of women. Urge your Senators to work for the ratification of CEDAW.

Violence Against Women

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The International Violence Against Women Act (H.R. 5905) was introduced in July and was referred to the House Committee on Foreign Affairs. Versions of the domestic Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) have passed the House and Senate. However, the creation of a conference committee—where members from both chambers work together to reconcile the legislation's differences—has been stalled for months. Since 1994, the Violence Against Women Act has helped countless victims of domestic and dating violence, sexual assault and stalking. Tell Congress that you support an inclusive VAWA and that partisan politics shouldn't jeopardize women's safety.

Reproductive Rights

Hadassah has become a campaign ally of This Is Personal, a campaign working to empower, educate and activate women across the country to protect women's reproductive health care. Learn more and contact your legislators in support of women's reproductive rights.

Pay Equity

Last month, the U.S. Census Bureau released new data confirming that the gender wage gap has not changed in the last decade. For every dollar a man earns, women with comparable education and experience make only 77 cents. Tell Congress that America's women are worth more and they deserve better!

Pregnant Workers Fairness Act

On September 19, the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act was introduced in the Senate. Another version of the bill was introduced in the House in May. This legislation would help pregnant workers maintain economic stability and a healthy pregnancy by requiring that employers provide reasonable work accommodations. Urge your elected officials to support and co-sponsor the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act today!
