Tomorrow House Votes on VAWA

February 27, 2013

The House is voting tomorrow on the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act. Urge your Representatives to oppose the House version of the bill and vote in favor of the Senate VAWA legislation!

Last week, the Senate passed the inclusive Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act in a bipartisan vote (78-22). Tomorrow, the House will vote on a different version of the legislation that would turn back the tides on years of progress—diverting funds away from essential services and depriving countless victims of necessary protections.

In response to strong pressure from some members of Congress and advocates like you, the House leadership has agreed to vote on the Senate version of the bill (S. 47) if the House version does not pass.

The Violence Against Women Act provides assistance to victims of domestic and dating violence, sexual assault and stalking—both women and men—by facilitating coordinated community responses to these crimes, funding specialized training for various levels of law enforcement, and supporting community-based organizations that offer programs for victims. Since its passage in 1994, more victims report domestic violence to the police and the rate of non-fatal intimate partner violence against women has decreased by 53 percent.

Hadassah, a member of the National Task Force to End Sexual and Domestic Violence Against Women, is a long-time advocate of awareness, education and legislative initiatives aimed at ending this type of violence and supporting the needs of victims and their families.

Two years for Congress to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act is long enough. Tell your Representatives that women’s safety is not a partisan issue and that they should reauthorize an inclusive VAWA tomorrow! Log in to the Hadassah National Action Center or use the Find My Elected Officials box for your Representative's office number or send an email message.
