Hadassah Applauds House Reauthorization of Inclusive, Bipartisan Violence Against Women Act

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
February 28, 2013

NEW YORK – In response to today’s House passage of the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, Marcie Natan, National President of Hadassah, the
Women’s Zionist Organization of America, released the following statement:

Hadassah welcomes the long-awaited reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, which comes after almost two long years of congressional debate. This vital legislation has helped the lives of countless victims since it was first passed in 1994, and this reauthorization will expand and improve the act’s impact on women and girls for years to come.

Central to Hadassah’s values is our support for women’s rights – in the United States, Israel and around the world. Today’s vote is not only a win for those who have been victims and survivors of violence, but for all advocates who work tirelessly to protect the rights of women and those in need – particularly among the most vulnerable communities. Hadassah’s network of 330,000 members, associates and supporters – found in every congressional district in the country – came together to advocate in favor of passage of a comprehensive VAWA – and today’s success will now provide expanded services and protections to women across the United States.

Reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act is a major step forward in the fight to prevent domestic and sexual violence, and Hadassah maintains its commitment to awareness, education and support for victims and their families.
