A vote on the gun control legislation package is planned for today!
The Senate is considering the Safe Communities, Safe Schools Act of 2013, which includes a bipartisan compromise on expanding background checks that has been proposed by Senators Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Pat Toomey (R-PA). The legislation also addresses the illegal trafficking of guns and school safety. As negotiations and debate continue, amendments from a wide range of Senators are also being considered.

Advocate for Comprehensive Gun Control Legislation

Today, Congress returned from a two-week recess to the issue of gun control at the top of its agenda. Over the last several months, Hadassah has worked with its coalition partners to advocate for comprehensive gun control legislation addressing firearms, improved access to mental health services, and a conversation about violence in the media.
Hadassah members, Associates and supporters participated in a Faiths Call-In Day to Prevent Gun Violence in February, and a second National Call-In Day will be held April 9. Contact your Senators and urge them to support comprehensive gun control legislation!
The Senate Judiciary Committee has approved a package of gun control legislation, which faces further negotiations and possible amendments. The ban on assault weapons was removed and now can only be introduced as an amendment—significantly decreasing its chances of passage. An alternative bill, that excludes background checks or bans on military style weapons and high capacity ammunition, is also being written.
At the recent Jewish Council for Public Affairs Plenum, Hadassah was proud to co-sponsor and support a policy resolution that called for limiting access to the most dangerous weapons and ammunition, waiting periods, volume sales restrictions, background checks, and diligent enforcement of regulations, in addition to improved access to mental health services, and a conversation about violence in the media.
