April 9 is Equal Pay Day 2013. Since Equal Pay day was established in 1996—17 years ago—the wage gap has decreased by only 4 cents. At this rate, the wage gap won’t close until 2057—45 years from now! America's women are worth more and they deserve better.Date: 4/9/2013
Hadassah strongly supports the adoption and strict enforcement of policies to eliminate employment discrimination, reduce the gender wage gap and ensure better economic security for women. Legislation from Congress is needed, but President Obama can take a major step to support pay equity TODAY!
Thank President Obama for his leadership on pay equity and urge him to issue an executive order barring retaliatory pay secrecy policies for federal contractors.
Countless workers are unaware that they are receiving unequal pay because they could be fired for discussing wages with colleagues. An executive order allowing employees of federal contractors to discuss their salaries without fear of losing their jobs is essential to helping women learn whether or not they are being paid fairly. This order would impact over 20 percent of the civilian workforce and lay the groundwork for broader reaching pay equity policies moving forward. Urge President Obama to issue an executive order via the Hadassah National Action Center.
The U.S. Census Bureau confirmed in 2012 that the gender wage gap has not changed in over a decade. It has been 50 years since the passage of the Equal Pay Act, and yet for every dollar a man earns, women with comparable education and experience make only 77 cents—costing the average American woman $700,000 to $2 million in lost wages over a working lifetime.
Equal Pay Day was originated by the National Committee on Pay Equity, of which Hadassah is a member, to illustrate the gap between men's and women's wages. Every year, on a Tuesday in April, Equal Pay Day draws attention to the extra months it takes for a woman’s wages to catch up to her male colleagues.
