Hadassah Welcomes Continued Progress Toward Expanding Egalitarian Prayer at Western Wall

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: April 25, 2013

NEW YORK —On April 22, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu approved Natan Sharansky's proposals to expand egalitarian prayer at the Western Wall and today, a Jerusalem District Court ruled in favor of women's rights to pray at the Wall. In response, Marcie Natan, National President of Hadassah, the Women's Zionist Organization of America, released the following statement:

Hadassah applauds the announcement this week that Prime Minister Netanyahu and his office are working closely with Natan Sharansky to implement his proposals to expand the Western Wall Plaza and create a new section for egalitarian prayer.

Hadassah has a longstanding commitment to the principles of women's equality and religious pluralism, and is proud to have members, associates and supporters from all segments of the Jewish community. Jewish leaders from across the religious and political spectra continue to come together on this issue, and I am hopeful that a resolution can be reached which will ensure that the Western Wall is a symbol of Jewish unity and diversity.

The ruling of the Jerusalem District Court today shows that progress is continuing and that Israel remains a leader and champion of women's rights. Hadassah urges the Israeli government to continue its leadership and support a solution which will allow all people to pray, individually and collectively, at the Western Wall freely, without harassment, and in accordance with their own religious practices.

Hadassah, the Women's Zionist Organization of America, is the largest women's Zionist Jewish membership organization in the United States, and was founded in 1912. 330,000 members, associates, and supporters strong, Hadassah is now in its second century, growing our commitment to innovative and life-changing medical care and research, women's empowerment, education, advocacy, philanthropy and building Jewish identity – in Israel, America and around the world.
