Make Yom Yerushalayim a day of celebration and a day of action!
Forty-six years ago, following the completion of the six-day war, Jerusalem was reunited once again. Since 1967, Hadassah's National Board has passed a long series of Policy Statements affirming support for Jerusalem as the undivided capital of Israel. In 1997, Hadassah passed a special Policy Statement in commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the reunification.
Hadassah, the Women's Zionist Organization of America celebrates with heartfelt joy the 30th anniversary of the reunification of Jerusalem. Historically and politically, spiritually and culturally, Jerusalem represents the heart and soul of the Jewish people. . . . We salute the Congress of the United States for its overwhelming adoption of resolutions and legislation recognizing united Jerusalem as the capital of the State of Israel and requiring the relocation of the American Embassy in Israel to Jerusalem. We urge the administration to implement this legislation in a timely fashion.
The Jerusalem Embassy Act was passed by Congress in 1995, but the legislation allows the president to suspend implementation by presidential waiver on the basis of national security concerns. The Jerusalem Embassy and Recognition Act of 2013 has been introduced in Congress, which calls on the President to immediately implement the provisions of the Jerusalem Embassy Act of 1995 and amends the act to remove the presidential waiver provision.
The United States, as an ally of Israel, must stand unequivocally for Israel's sovereignty and security. In honor of Yom Yerushalayim, urge the Obama administration and Congress to strengthen their commitment to a strong U.S.-Israel relationship by recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and moving the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
