Women's Rights Update

October 31, 2013

Visit Hadassah's National Action Center to learn more about the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, gun control for domestic violence prevention, & advocate for a variety of women’s rights legislation!

35th Anniversary of the Pregnancy Discrimination Act

Eighty percent of all working women will become pregnant at some point in their lifetime. Today marks the 35th Anniversary of the Pregnancy Discrimination Act, but more still needs to be done to protect pregnant workers' rights.

The Pregnant Workers Fairness Act—like the Americans with Disabilities Act—would help pregnant workers maintain economic stability and a healthy pregnancy by requiring that employers provide reasonable work accommodations (such as additional bathroom and/or sitting breaks, light lifting duty, or basic modifications to physical tasks).

It is time to close the loopholes that deprive women of basic employment rights! Click here to learn more and urge your legislators to co-sponsor and support the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act!

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Hadassah is a proud advocate of the Violence Against Women Act and a member of the Interfaith Domestic Violence Coalition, coordinated by our partners Jewish Women International. Hadassah encourages its members and associates to support domestic violence awareness and prevention by advocating for comprehensive gun control legislation.

The statistics about guns and domestic violence are staggering. The presence of a firearm in a domestic violence situation increases the risk of a fatality by 500 percent and the FBI estimated that intimate partner violence accounted for 64 percent of women murdered with guns in 2010. Once a restraining order is filed, background checks would prevent that party from purchasing a firearm. However, in 2012 alone, 6.6 million guns were purchased without a background check.

Background checks and other safety measures can make a huge impact—38 percent fewer women are killed by intimate partners in states that require background checks for private handgun purchases. In honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, urge Congress to support comprehensive gun control legislation today!
