|Urge Senate to Support Fair Minimum Wage Act|
For the past four years, the federal minimum wage has been stuck at just $7.25 per hour and the rate for tipped workers ($2.13 per hour) has not increased in over twenty years! Far too many American families are living paycheck to paycheck—struggling to afford life’s most basic necessities.
In the coming weeks, the Senate is expected to vote on the Fair Minimum Wage Act of 2013. Hadassah is proud to join coalition partners in today’s Day of Action to support this crucial legislation. Call 1-888-705-5182* or email your Senators today, and urge them to support the Fair Minimum Wage Act!
Currently, a single parent working full-time at minimum-wage is living nearly $4,000 below the federal poverty line for a family of three. If the minimum wage was increased to $10.10 per hour, the boost in annual earnings would be enough to pull that family of poverty. The Fair Minimum Wage Act outlines a plan to gradually raise the federal minimum wage from $7.25 to $10.10 per hour, increase the tipped minimum cash wage from $2.13 per hour to 70 percent of the minimum wage, and index these wages to keep pace with inflation.
In July, Hadassah’s National Board and delegates passed the Women’s Economic Equity and Security Policy Statement, calling for new measures to increase the minimum wage, reduce the gender wage gap; protect pregnant workers rights; and expand and promote opportunities for earned paid parental, family and sick leave.
More than 30 million workers would receive a raise if the Fair Minimum Wage Act is enacted, helping countless American families and spurring economic recovery and growth nationwide. With women constituting 60 percent of minimum wage workers—and 70 percent of tipped workers—raising the minimum wage would also have a significant impact on women’s economic security and closing the gender wage gap.
Visit the Hadassah National Action Center or call 1-888-705-5182 and urge your Senators to vote YES on the Fair Minimum Wage Act of 2013!
