|Slavery: A Modern-Day Reality|
April 17, 2014
Central to the celebration of Passover is the remembrance that once we were slaves, and now we are free. Tragically, slavery remains a modern-day reality for an estimated 27 million people worldwide—more than at any other time in history.
Take Action! Urge Congress to pass the Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act. This bi-partisan legislation would increase penalties for traffickers and expand funding for law enforcement training programs and critical victims’ services.
Every day, women and children are forced, defrauded, or coerced into labor or sexual exploitation. Trafficking and its related crimes not only harm the victims involved; they also undermine the social, political and economic fabric of the nations where they occur by demeaning women and increasing violence and crime.
Hadassah’s Trafficking in Women Policy Statement urges all nations to make the elimination of the trafficking of women a priority by strengthening anti-trafficking legislation, sharing information, aggressively prosecuting traffickers and mounting public information campaigns. Hadassah further urges countries to provide safe havens for victims of trafficking and institute a comprehensive range of social services for their rehabilitation.
