Women's History & Women's Rights

Our History is Our Strength is the 2011 theme of the National Women's History Project. Today, in honor of the 100th International Women's Day, Women's History Month and a legacy of great female leaders, Hadassah advocates for the rights of women.

Reproductive Rights

Last week, the No Tax Payer Funding for Abortion Act (H.R. 3) passed the House Judiciary Committee—the most recent attack on women's reproductive rights from Congress and state legislatures across the country. Hadassah units from Florida to California have started advocating against these bills and amendments in their local communities and Hadassah urges all its Members, Associates and supporters to make their voices heard. Hadassah is a strong advocate for a woman's freedom of choice and opposes any attempts to restrict, through state administrative regulations, legislation, or court action, the right to reproductive choice and/or use of family planning programs delivering any and all services.

Contact your legislators and voice opposition to H.R. 3, The Protect Life Act (H.R. 358), proposals to cut funding for family planning services—domestically and abroad—and any anti-choice legislation proposed in your state.

Pay Equity

According to the recently released White House report Women in America: Indicators of Social and Economic
Well-Being
, the gender pay gap persists at all levels of educational attainment. Hadassah recently co-signed an amicus brief with the National Women's Law Center, American Civil Liberties Union and others, submitted for the Supreme Court case Dukes v. Wal-Mart, Inc. At issue is whether female employees of Wal-Mart can collectively sue the company for systematic gender discrimination in pay and promotion policies. Hadassah stands with the women of Wal-Mart and continues to advocate for pay equity.

More information about Equal Pay Day, April 12, and the reintroduction of the Paycheck Fairness Act will be forthcoming.
