The Henrietta Szold Group of Hadassah of Greater Philadelphia
The Henrietta Szold Group of Hadassah of Greater Philadelphia organizes many Mitzvah projects on a regular basis. Women from other Hadassah groups, synagogues, and community centers in Philadelphia, New Jersey and Connecticut knit and crochet hats and blankets for children who are undergoing chemotherapy, putting a smile on all who receive them. This project started in 2003 with 3 knitters and 2 hospitals. It has now grown to include 120 knitters and 23 hospitals in 11 states. To date they have shipped 7900 hats and 2000 blankets. Also, many women who travel to Israel and visit Hadassah Hospital take the hats and blankets and give them to the children. A note inside the package says that it comes with love from Hadassah.
Another ongoing Mitzvah project of Hadassah of Greater Philadelphia is the collection of new books at its annual Education Day which attracts 300 people. Hadassah has established an alliance with Children's Hospital of Philadelphia's "Reach Out and Read" program, whose objective is to help stamp out illiteracy.
People attending Education Day are asked to bring new books and over 1000 books have been donated to this worthy cause. In every book is a bookplate that says that it was donated by Hadassah.
Both of these projects have made the women who participate feel good about themselves that they are doing a Mitzvah for others. In addition, much positive publicity has been generated for Hadassah and women have joined as a result of their participation in the projects.
