Dr. Yael Houri-Haddad
Yael Houri-Haddad, who immigrated to Israel
from Tunisia at age 14, is a Hadassah University Medical Center dentist with a
PhD in oral biology. She acquired both specialties at Hadassah where she now
teaches, treats patients, and conducts research in the Department
of Prosthodontics at the Hadassah Hebrew University School of Dental
Dr. Houri-Haddad spent her sabbatical year at Boston University's School of Dental Medicine doing research on the control of inflammatory gum disease. Funded by an Israel Science Foundation grant, she devoted the following year to exploring the disease's genetic component at the Forsyth Institute, a Harvard affiliate. Now that she has returned home, her studies in Boston will augment her research on the genetic basis of gum disease.
Long before she arrived in Israel, Dr. Houri-Haddad relates, she was already familiar with Hadassah because "my mother used to travel from Tunisia to Hadassah for treatment." Dr. Houri-Haddad began her "Hadassah life" with National Service in the Department of Orthopedics. She was then accepted by both the Medical School and the Dental School, chose dentistry, and has been part of Hadassah ever since. As she expresses, "This is my country, this is my home. Hadassah is my home."Date: 11/14/2011
