Is a Cure for Macular Degeneration in Sight?

Ophthalmology is one of the areas that will be highlighted at our upcoming Continuing Medical Education program in Israel, October 14-15, 2012.

Age-related macular degeneration is the leading cause of vision loss over the age of 50. Research into a cure for macular degeneration, using human embryonic stem cells (hESC), is underway at Hadassah. The goal of the research is to create pigmented retinal cells and use them to replace those damaged by age-related macular degeneration.

The research is based on the work of Professor Eyal Banin, Director of the Center for Retinal and Macular Degeneration in Hadassah's Ophthalmology Department; Professor Benjamin Reubinoff, Director of Hadassah's Human Embryonic Stem Cell Research Center at the Goldyne Savad Institute of Gene Therapy; and Cellcure Neurosciences, Ltd., a start up research arm of Hadasit, Hadassah Medical Organization's technology transfer company.

This team received international recognition when their work was published in the October 2, 2009 issue of Cell Stem Cell. On October 15, you will hear from Professor Banin and other members of the Department of Ophthalmology on this research and other issues.

Innovation in Cancer Treatment at HMO

Using immunology and genetic therapies to possibly cure cancer? This is what researchers at Hadassah are doing with liver cancer, which is associated with inflammation of the liver and usually incurable. Dr. Eli Pikarsky of the Department of Pathology at Hadassah, and Prof. Yinon Ben-Neriah, in the Lautenberg Center for Immunology at Hebrew University - Hadassah Medical School, Jerusalem, found that by blocking the protein responsible for the inflammation, the number of cancer cells produced was significantly reduced. In addition, an antibody that was developed to target the signal from inflammatory cells that triggers protein activation, thereby preventing cancer cell production and ultimately reducing the incidence of liver cancer. Dr. Pikarsky has also done original research on breast, prostate, and testicular cancers.

Dr. Pikarsky will be among the speakers at FROM CONCEPT TO CURE, our upcoming Continuing Medical Education (CME) program of the Hadassah Physicians Council and Hadassah Medical Organization, October 14-15, 2012. Find full accreditation details on the CME agenda.

We encourage you to make your reservation now. Spaces are filling up quickly. Don't miss this opportunity to hear about novel research and therapies being implemented at Hadassah Medical Organization in Jerusalem. But it's not all work and no play: there will be ample opportunity for you to visit and explore Israel, too.
