Bertha Katz

Hadassah's education program Ivrit la Hadassah, is my thin thread life changing moment. It led me to Goldie Bernstein (in blessed memory) who changed my life learning Hebrew, teaching me our Jewish History and entering me into a spiritual way of life.

On October 2003, she encouraged me to attend Simchas Torah services at the Temple. Previously I had never done this. At the Temple anyone who wished to carry the Torah was encouraged to do so. This life changing moment for me is expressed in the poem I wrote.

A LOVE POEM TO THE TORAH
The moment was arriving
My heart racing with excitement like a child on her first amusement ride
I reached out and there you were
Placed in my arms
I felt your warmth through me
I cherished holding you
We walked together
My face beaming with delight
For I have found a new love in my life.
In a circle you revealed all or yourself to me
Five books telling your whole story
My closeness to you becomes deeper and deeper
I see all of you before me from
beginning to end
I am learning to understand you
Through you inner peace has come.

Thank you Goldie Bernstein, and Ivrit la Hadassah for the enrichment my live has had since that moment of carrying the Torah. I have grown spiritually and look forward to Simchas Torah every year.
