When I was a young Group President in the early 1990's, Marlene Post came to our Chapter to speak at our Special Gifts event. Marlene was National President at that time. The evening before our event, we held a cocktail party at one of our members homes so that our Board could meet and greet Marlene. So of course Marlene spoke to us. He talk that evening centered around family and how we, Hadassah volunteers, would not be able to do what we do without the support of our families and how Hadassah becomes a part of each of our own families. And Marlene said it well: G-d first, family second, and Hadassah third!
When Marlene was finished, she took questions. So, I raised my hand. And what I said was that with family being so important, I understand that there is a certificate for Life Membership for when a girl is born, when she becomes Bat Mitzvah, and as an adult. I only have boys and there is no certificate for them to become Associates when they are Bar Mitzvah. Well, Marlene told me to write that down and give it to her that night before we left. I did. And about 4 months later I received a letter with a picture of what the Bar Mitzvah Associate certificate was going to look like.
I made my older son became an Associate in 1999, my husband at the next convention which was in L.A. and my younger son in 2002.
I will never forget how empowered I felt as a young woman. This made me realize that, even if I was a Group President at the time (I am now my Region\'s OVP), each and every one of us really do make a difference!
