Wilma (Willie) Walter

How did I get involved with Hadassah? Well I can't remember exactly how, but I know that Hadassah and Young Judaea were my first Jewish loves.

My closest friends, "The Jr. Debs" a group of girls from my Jr. High and then Sr. High classes went to Young Judaea meetings, so I went, too. Naomi was lucky enough to go to camp Young Judaea in Nassau, New Hampshire. Harriet went to camp too and would write to her grandparents on a Yiddish typewriter. Soni, went to Israel with Hadassah. I went to a camp in Rhode Island, Camp Jori, from about 5 yrs of age until I was 16. My two sisters and I went to camp together. I started leading a Young Judaean group in Cranston, R.I. Bill Meltzer was my Boss, from Hadassah. I was invited to go to Camp Y.J. in Nassau, and taught in the arts and crafts area. Life moved on and I met my husband at another Jewish camp in the N.Y. Catskills. After we were married we moved to Brooklyn, NY and finally to Roslyn, NY.

Several years later I was Vice President of a day Hadassah group in Roslyn, NY, which I helped organize. Marlene Post was our adviser. Moving forward about 30 years, we moved to Lakewood Ranch, FL. I joined SaBra Hadassah in Sarasota/Bradenton, FL. Norm and I later went on our first Hadassah Mission, and Marlene Post was our leader! In 2006 I became President of SaBra chapter of Hadassah, with at that time 900 members! In 2006 we took our entire family to Israel with a Hadassah Intergenerational tour and Bar/Bat Mitzvah group. Upon returning we made all 7of our immediate family, life members of Hadassah. Hadassah and Israel are part of my life.
