My Hadassah Hospital

Sybil Kaplan

During my years in the Greater Kansas City Chapter, as Great Plains Region President and on the National Board, I saw videos and films of "our Hadassah hospital" and, later, it became more real through my visits there.

When we moved to Israel, we made sure to join the health fund that afforded us access to the hospital and its facilities. With each visit, the hospital took on new meaning to me.

In July 2009, I added a new dimension to my understanding when I went for a day of pre-op procedures and then returned next day for a shoulder replacement.

My Hadassah-associate husband, Barry, and life member daughter, Elissa, accompanied me until the operating room (and they could have even gone there).

After four hours, I was the fifth in a room for four with a French-speaking woman, an older Israeli woman, a young Israeli woman and an Arab woman.
Care was excellent. Attention was immediate. The typically Israeli food was good. Physical therapy began on the second day. Friends, relatives and my rabbi came to visit.

I went home the morning of day four.

Each time I get off the bus and walk through the mall, I get a special feeling that is hard to describe.

Wouldn't my mother, z"l, and the women I knew in the Greater Kansas City area, and my region "kvell" with me that I had this new connection.
It is now two years and the physical therapy in my health fund and the care of the professor of orthopedic surgery with a specialty in shoulders have given me the expected 85% return of use.

I still have a special feeling inside when I return for a doctor's visit or any other need because "my" hospital is Hadassah and I am a Hadassah-Israel chapter co-president now and this connection feels special.
