|Hadassah’s Response to Kerry’s Use of Apartheid Term|
April 29, 2014
NEW YORK – Yesterday, Secretary Kerry released a statement On Support for Israel, clarifying earlier remarks in which he used the term apartheid. In response, Marcie Natan, National President of Hadassah, The Women's Zionist Organization of America, Inc., released the following statement:
Hadassah supports Secretary of State John Kerry's efforts to create a lasting peace in the Middle East and I appreciate his response to his error in using the word apartheid. The use of this term was inappropriate and divisive—straining the atmosphere of dialogue necessary for the peace process to move forward.
As President Obama has said in the past, injecting an emotionally loaded term like apartheid into the discussion does not advance the goal of two states living side by side in peace and security.
The current next steps for the peace process remain unclear, with many difficult decisions ahead. We welcome Secretary Kerry's continued efforts and remain hopeful for a future of stability in the region and a peaceful fulfillment of a two-state solution.
