Hadassah Expresses Outrage about Nigerian Kidnappings and Urges Action

May 6, 2014

Last month over 200 Nigerian girls were kidnapped by an Islamic extremist group, Boko Haram, which has announced that it will sell the girls. Today—as the United States offered the government of Nigeria military and other assistance—additional abductions have also been reported. In response, Marcie Natan, National President of Hadassah, The Women's Zionist Organization of America, Inc., released the following statement:

On behalf of Hadassah's 330,000 members, associates, and supporters I express our horror and outrage at the kidnapping of these Nigerian girls and support for the worldwide #BringBackOurGirls campaign. I appreciate the American government's offer of assistance and I urge the administration to provide all avenues of support and exertion of international pressure in order to ensure that these young women can return home speedily and safely.

Nations and leaders from across the globe must speak out against this atrocity and demand that all women—especially young girls—must be protected from violence, trafficking, and exploitation.

As we celebrated our freedom during the Passover holiday last month, we also recognized the 27 million people for whom slavery remains a modern-day reality. Situations like what has happened in Nigeria, unfortunately, illustrate how much work is left to be done. Hadassah is an advocate for the International Violence Against Women Act and urges Congress to pass this legislation, which would send a strong statement that ending violence against women and girls worldwide is a top American priority.

Thank the President for his offers of support to Nigeria and insist that he continue working to ensure that these young women can return home speedily and safely and urge Congress to pass the International Violence Against Women Act.
