Urge HHS to Protect Women's Healthcare Access

Over the last several weeks, American's have seen a continuous onslaught of attacks against women's reproductive rights. State legislatures across the country are seeking to declare a fertilized egg a person, the House of Representatives passed legislation denying women life saving medical care, and Congress is once again threatening funding for family planning services.

Currently, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is accepting public comments regarding the establishment of new state-based insurance exchanges. Anti-choice advocates have bombarded HHS with comments opposing comprehensive reproductive healthcare access for women and families.

In order for the Affordable Care Act (ACA) to pass Congress a deal was made to further restrict federal funding for abortion, which will impact insurance plans provided through the state-based exchanges. It is important that HHS implement regulations that, while complying with ACA, maintain women's access to comprehensive and affordable reproductive health coverage.

Hadassah members and leaders showed HHS their support for preventative women's healthcare this past August, and now it is time to speak out for access to comprehensive women's and reproductive health services.

Hadassah reaffirms its longstanding position that limiting access to important women's health and family planning services deprives women of their right to make health care decisions privately, in consultation with medical advice, and in accordance with their own religious, moral and ethical values.

A draft letter to HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius follows below. The deadline for public comments is October, 31. Click here to show your support for women's health and women's rights today!

Dear Secretary Sebelius,

I strongly urge HHS to implement regulations that, while complying with ACA, maintain women's access to comprehensive and affordable reproductive healthcare.

Limiting access to important women's health and family planning services deprives women of their right to make health care decisions privately, in consultation with medical advice, and in accordance with their own religious, moral and ethical values.

Sincerely,
