Israeli Security Update
Hadassah representatives joined coalition partners from the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations on a briefing yesterday with Ido Aharoni, Consul General of Israel in New York. The Consul General provided background information regarding the planned terrorist attack against Israel, assessed the current security situation—with over 140 rockets launched from Gaza and 1 million Israelis in shelters—and discussed various questions for moving forward. The Conference of Presidents released a statement condemning the rocket fire and calling on the international community to prevent weapons flow and financial support, which would enable future attacks. The statement can be found below. Hadassah and its coalition partners will continue to monitor the security situation in Israel and will provide additional updates as they become available.
CONFERENCE OF PRESIDENTS CONDEMNS CONTINUING ROCKET FIRE FROM GAZA ON SOUTHERN ISRAEL CALLS UPON INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY TO DENOUNCE ATTACKS, PREVENT WEAPONS FLOW AND FINANCIAL SUPPORT ENABLING FUTURE ATTACKS
New York, March 11, 2012
The following statement was issued on behalf of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations by Richard B. Stone, Chairman, and Malcolm Hoenlein, CEO. We condemn in the strongest terms the continuing rocket fire from Gaza against the civilian populations of southern Israel. It is absolutely unacceptable that hundreds of thousands of people, up to a million, live under constant threat of terrorist attack using mortars and rockets as well as cross-border assaults. The Palestinian terrorist groups perpetrating these attacks seek to kill indiscriminately and bring normal life and commerce to a standstill. Schools have had to be closed and an entire region had to spend this weekend, as they have countless nights, in bunkers. No country can or should have to tolerate such a situation. Israel must do whatever it deems appropriate to safeguard its citizens and borders. The international community must not only denounce such attacks in unambiguous terms, but they also must help prevent the weapons flow and financial support that enables these attacks to continue. Egypt must be assisted to assure that the transfer of weapons is stopped. Once again we see the nefarious role of Iran as it provides financing and weapons to terrorist groups in Gaza. This explosive situation can be quieted only by a unified front led by the United States that acts against and sanctions the terrorists and their supporters.
