Hadassah Convention Approves Budget 2013 and Elects Officers

The business meeting of the 96th Hadassah convention was held Thursday afternoon of the Centennial National Convention in Jerusalem with Ellen Hershkin, national secretary, of Dix Hills, New York, presiding.

She told the delegates gathered that they were there to begin "the future of the second century of Hadassah, participating in the decision-making process to move us forward."

In the Credentials report, Frieda Rosenberg of Merrick, New York reported that there were 1,497 people registered, 975 delegates, 459 first-time convention attendees, 169 from the national board, representatives of 36 regions and nine Big Chapters as well as from 359 local chapters in 40 states. There were 350 male Associates in attendance. She also acknowledged 300 Hadassah-Israel volunteers.

For the 2013 fiscal year, Hadassah's quota for regions will be $36 million, based on Hadassah's philanthropic needs.

The budget was presented by Ellyn Lyons, national treasurer, from Toms River, New Jersey, and Rick Annis, chief financial officer. They also hope to raise $107.8 million dollars total, including a new area for new initiatives.

One of the nine priorities for 2013, as part of their strategic plan, will be to focus on marketing.

Elections were held with Region presidents and Big Chapter presidents appointed to the National Service Committee; those serving 15 years or more on the national board joining the Honorary Council; and a variety of other members from the Greater Metropolitan area and outside the Greater Metropolitan area were elected to the board.

A tribute was given to Ellen Hershkin, outgoing secretary; Judy Shereck of Montvale, New Jersey, was elected new national secretary; Ellyn Lyons was re-elected national treasurer and Marcie Natan was re-elected national president.

One resolution was brought to the membership and passed unanimously – Hadassah reaffirms its commitment to and support for freedom of worship for all women at the Western Wall.

Past national president, Carmela Kalmanson, installed the officers.
