News Update

Just hours ago, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Egyptian Foreign Minister Mohammed Kamel Amra announced in a joint news conference that a ceasefire agreement was reached and will take effect at 9 p.m. local time (2 p.m. EDT).  Hadassah is continuing to follow these developments and will share additional information when it becomes available.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas yesterday, and Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi today.  Egypt hosted the negotiations in Cairo and played a central role—using its ideological relationship with Hamas, diplomatic relationship with Israel, and strong history and financial ties to the United States, to work with all parties.

Since Israel launched Operation Pillar of Defense a week ago, over 1,400 rockets have been fired from Gaza and five Israelis have been killed.

Today, a bombing injured 23 people on a Tel Aviv bus—the first attack in the city since 2006. Authorities on the scene have concluded that it was not a suicide bombing and started searching for the terrorist(s), believing that one armed with explosives may still be in the area. Hamas praised the attack, for which the Fatah-linked Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade claimed responsibility.

Hadassah Update

Hadassah National President Marcie Natan is on the ground in Israel—meeting with Hadassah’s medical and educational staff and attending briefings with government officials throughout the country.

Yesterday, sirens went off in Jerusalem that impacted both of Hadassah’s hospitals. Hadassah Medical Organization (HMO) Director of External Relations Ron Krumer provided the following report.

Yesterday at around 1 p.m. the sirens in Jerusalem went off. Here on the third floor of the main building at Ein Kerem, we left our offices and went to the staircase, where we were joined by people who were in the outpatient clinics on this floor. In other areas of the two hospitals, people did the same, and patients were moved away from windows. After a couple of minutes we were told that the rocket hit the ground south of Jerusalem, not far from a Palestinian village; all of us were able to return to work.

Forty members of the HMO staff, including thirty physicians, have been called up to serve in their IDF units and more staff and physicians are expected to be called. As a tertiary care hospital, HMO is prepared to receive wounded ambulanced from rocket attacks and airlifted directly from the battlefield.  A soldier who was transferred to Hadassah a few days ago was discharged earlier today, but will return to the hospital for the next few days to undergo physiotherapy for his hand.
