FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
November 29, 2012
NEW YORK —In response to today’s United Nations General Assembly vote conferring on the Palestinian people the status of “non-member observer state,” Hadassah National President Marcie Natan released the following statement on behalf of Hadassah’s 330,000 members, Associates and supporters:
Hadassah stands firm with the State of Israel and affirms that the only step forward for the Israeli-Palestinian peace process is direct, bilateral negotiations without pre-conditions.
It is troubling that the Palestinians claim to be pursing the goals of the 1947 Partition Plan, but consistently ignore the plan’s spirit of two states for two people, living peacefully side-by-side.
We welcomed the news of the ceasefire last week and were hopeful that Israel would be able to return to normalcy. Now more than ever, we join with the global Jewish community as we show our support for Israel and its unquestionable right to defend the Israeli people.
For Hadassah, Israel is not just the Jewish homeland, but is truly our home. It is where we have built state-of-the-art medical facilities, engaged in life-changing medical research, and connected thousands of Jewish teens and college students to their Jewish roots.
We reiterate our disappointment in the outcome of today’s vote and the process by which it occurred. We look hopefully toward a future of stability for the region and call on the governments of Israel, the Palestinian Authority, the United States, and the international community, including the United Nations, to resume negotiations and pursue, in earnest, the peaceful fulfillment of a two-state solution. We believe in a peaceful future for Israel and its neighbors.
