Protect Charitable Giving Incentives

Leaders in Washington are locked in heated budget negotiations aimed to avoid significant spending and tax level changes—set to take effect in January—if a compromise cannot be reached. Tomorrow and Wednesday, nonprofit leaders and supporters from across the country are participating in Protect Giving Days, lobbying elected officials to protect charitable giving incentives.

Hadassah, once again, joins fellow philanthropic organizations in speaking out against plans to decrease charitable giving tax breaks, which encourage donations for numerous programs and services in the United States and around the world. Without the support of generous donors, countless charities could be forced to close their doors or cut essential services for the poor, elderly and unemployed.

According to the Charitable Giving Coalition, the proposal—which would reduce write offs for charitable deductions from 35 to 28 percent—could decrease donations up to $5.6 billion. The charitable sector accounts for nine percent of American wages, 10 percent of jobs, and contributes $1.1 trillion to the marketplace each year.

Hadassah, through the continuous support of its Members, Associates and donors, has been a vibrant member of the philanthropic community for over 100 years. This proposal could mean cuts to Hadassah College and Young Judaea scholarships, fewer teachers at Hadassah's Youth Aliyah villages and less funding for groundbreaking research at Hadassah Medical Organization.

Amidst the current political climate, Hadassah reaffirms its support for the Jewish Council for Public Affairs' Statement on Civility, which encourages its members and all elected officials to accept and promote a culture of civility and cooperation in order to handle the many challenges ahead. Contact your elected officials and urge them to work across the aisle to protect charitable giving, while also finding ways to help all struggling Americans.
