40th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade

On January 22, 1973, the Supreme Court handed down a landmark decision in Roe v. Wade, recognizing a woman's constitutional right to make her own reproductive health choices—including seeking access to legal abortion. Forty years later, the fight continues with new attacks on reproductive rights launched every year. Defeats of these proposals are hard fought and victories hard won.

The last Congress considered legislation that would restrict women's access to reproductive health coverage, allow hospitals to deny pregnant women life-saving care, institute threats of penalties for physicians, and slash funding for important women's health and family planning services. Federal and state legislators have proposed Personhood initiatives—legislation and public referenda that would declare a fertilized egg a person—and bills that would require women to undergo transvaginal ultrasounds before receiving abortions.

Hadassah and its coalition partners have been advocating for the MARCH for Military Women Act and the Shaheen Amendment since August, 2011. Finally, with the passage of the 2013 National Defense Reauthorization Act last month, servicewomen may now use private funds to obtain an abortion on a military base and receive federal coverage of abortion in cases of rape and incest through the military health insurance system.

Mark Roe's 40th Anniversary by showing your support and help to protect reproductive rights for generations to come!

Hadassah is a long time advocate for the freedom of choice and supports a woman's right to make family planning decisions privately, in consultation with medical advice, and in accordance with one's own religious, moral and ethical values. Hadassah members, associates and supporters are encouraged to speak out for women's reproductive rights and join coalitions with like-minded organizations to mobilize their local communities.

Contact your elected officials about reproductive rights. Voice opposition to family planning funding cuts, restrictions on women's health access and reproductive services, and any anti-choice legislation proposed in your state. Visit the Hadassah National Action Center to contact your federal legislators.

In September, Hadassah became a campaign ally of This Is Personal, a campaign working to empower, educate and activate women across the country to protect women's reproductive health care. In honor of the Roe anniversary, the campaign has launched the Not in Her Shoes project, collecting photos of shoes and captions about reproductive rights. Click here to view the Not In Her Shoes website and to submit your own photo and caption.
