January 29, 2013 marked the fourth anniversary of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, but the fight for pay equity is far from over.
The U.S. Census Bureau confirmed in 2012 that the gender wage gap has not changed in over a decade. It has been 50 years since the passage of the Equal Pay Act, and yet for every dollar a man earns, women with comparable education and experience make only 77 cents—costing the average American woman $700,000 to $2 million in lost wages over a working lifetime.
Hadassah, a longtime member of the National Committee on Pay Equity, strongly supports the adoption and strict enforcement of policies to eliminate employment discrimination, reduce the gender wage gap and ensure better economic security for women.

Urge your legislators to support pay equity legislation. Over the last two weeks, Congress has reintroduced pay equity legislation such as the Paycheck Fairness Act and Fair Pay Act. These bills would deter wage discrimination by updating the Equal Pay Act, barring retaliation against employees who disclose their own wages to coworkers and require equal pay for equivalent work.
Urge President Obama to issue an executive order barring retaliatory pay secrecy policies for federal contractors. Too many workers, like Lilly Ledbetter, receive unequal pay for years because they could be fired for discussing wages with colleagues. While federal legislation is still needed to protect all employees in the U.S., this important first step would reach over 20 percent of the civilian workforce. An executive order allowing employees of federal contractors to discuss their salaries without fear of losing their jobs is essential to helping women learn whether or not they are being paid fairly.
