Hadassah Condemns Turkish Prime Minister’s Comments on Zionism

Press Release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
March 1, 2013

NEW YORK— In response to the comments by Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan denigrating Zionism, Marcie Natan, National President of Hadassah, the Women's Zionist Organization of America, Inc., released the following statement:

Hadassah unequivocally condemns the statements by Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan – calling Zionism a "crime against humanity" – made recently at a United Nations event in Vienna. Amidst the campaign of anti-Israel activities occurring across the globe this week, these comments are unfortunately yet another example of the systematic effort to tarnish and delegitimize the State of Israel.

As we have seen, time and time again, Zionism and Israel are criticized on the international stage—met by applause from the world's most notorious leaders and silence from countless others. On behalf of Hadassah's 330,000 members, associates and supporters, I urge all world leaders to condemn these remarks and promote constructive dialogue in order to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and pursue a future of peace in the Middle East.

Since Hadassah's founding in 1912, we have combated global anti-Semitism and I continue to pledge our support to educational, legislative and diplomatic efforts to combat the growth of anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism wherever it may appear.

Hadassah welcomes the White House's denunciation and urges Secretary of State John Kerry, currently in Turkey, to hold Prime Minister Erdogan accountable for his comments and urge Erdogan to become a broker of peace in the region.
