NEW YORK—Hadassah, the Women's Zionist Organization of America, welcomes yesterday's Supreme Court rulings which call the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional and dismiss California's Proposition 8, expanding same-sex couples' access to federal and other benefits. In response to these landmark decisions, Marcie Natan, Hadassah's national president, released the following statement:

Hadassah reaffirms our support of equality for all Americans, including lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered Americans, and our commitment to equal protection under the law for all couples. Hadassah has long supported LGBT rights, and we firmly believe that it is the government's responsibility to ensure that all Americans are treated equally and have equal access to the same benefits. Hadassah also has been a strong supporter of state and federal civil rights legislation to protect against hate crimes, discrimination and bullying based on sexual orientation.

Hadassah was proud to join with partner organizations to submit amicus curiae briefs in these court cases to show our staunch support for equality, religious freedom and civil rights. As the brief states:

Hadassah vigorously condemns discrimination of any kind and, as a pillar of the Jewish community, understands the dangers of bigotry. Hadassah strongly supports the constitutional guarantees of religious liberty and equal protection, and rejects discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. Hadassah supports government action that provides civil status to committed same-sex couples and their families equal to the civil status provided to the committed relationships of men and women and their families, with all associated legal rights and obligations, both federal and state.

Yesterday's rulings are a reaffirmation of our country's commitment to our founding ideals and will pave the way for the protection of civil rights for all Americans.
