Hadassah Magazine Wins Nine Rockower Awards

The Rockower Awards, sometimes referred to as the "Jewish Pulitzers," are given out by the American Jewish Press Association, the professional organization of Jewish journals and journalists.  Members of the AJPA include all the national and most local Jewish newspapers, national and international magazines and web-based publications. Judges for the awards are generally journalists from mainstream publications and occasionally a former editor of a Jewish publication.

The Rockowers were inaugurated in the early 1980s, and Hadassah magazine has won more than 315 over the years; it was also the first Jewish publication ever nominated for a national magazine award, in 1993. This year's prizes were announced June 26 at the annual conference of the American Jewish Press Association in Seattle.

As in many previous years, Hadassah magazine won more awards than any other publication (magazine, newspaper or website), and more than all other magazines combined.

Eight of the nine awards were first prizes. The only second prize Hadassah magazine received was in a category in which it also won first prize.

Below is the list of awards:

First place in feature writing: A Legacy in Harmony, Tom Tugend's article on the family of Daniel Pearl a decade after his murder

First place in single commentary: Letter from Jerusalem: Triage for Founding Values by Gershom Gorenberg
