Women's Equality Day 2013

Press Release

August 26, 2013

Ninety-three years ago today, the 19th Amendment—granting women the right to vote—was officially adopted as part of the United States Constitution. In 1971, Congresswoman—and Hadassah Member—Bella Abzug championed the creation of Women’s Equality Day on August 26 to commemorate the amendment’s passage.

Today, Hadassah is proud to announce that it has become a National Ally of Vision 2020, a national coalition of organizations and individuals united in the commitment to achieve women’s economic and social equality. The coalition was developed by the Institute for Women's Health and Leadership at Drexel University College of Medicine that works with affiliated organizations to advance the issues most important to women.

Since its launch in 2010, Vision 2020 has been expanding its national network of women leaders, including delegates from all 50 states and allied national women’s organizations representing over 20 million women and girls. As part of a nationally allied organization, Hadassah’s leaders, members, associates and supporters are encouraged to form partnerships with other Vision 2020 Allies, attend Vision 2020 Regional Conferences, and consider becoming a Vision 2020 Delegate.

Vision 2020's Campaign for Equality will work to achieve the following five goals by the year 2020, when the centennial of the 19th Amendment will be celebrated:

  • Senior Leadership: to increase the number of women in senior leadership positions
  • Pay Equity: advance women's economic security and achieve pay equity
  • Family-Friendly Workplace: promote family-friendly workplace policies
  • Youth Education: educate young people to value gender equality, shared leadership, and civic engagement
  • Voter Mobilization: engage and educate women voters and increase women's participation in the political process

Hadassah has a long history of advocacy on all of these issues, most recently with the passage of a new Women’s Economic Equity and Security Policy Statement at last month’s National Business Meeting. Hadassah looks forward to working with Vision 2020 and the coalition’s other National Allies to achieve these goals.
