Hadassah Medical Organization Director General Avigdor Kaplan has named Hadassah physician Prof Yoram Weiss as the new medical director of Hadassah's hospital in Ein Kerem.
Prof. Weiss, an anesthesiologist and expert in critical care, was born in Tel Aviv in 1959. He is a graduate of the Technion's School of Medicine in Haifa and completed his residency in Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at Hadassah Hospital.
He continued his specialization with Fellowships in these fields first at Hadassah and at the University of Pennsylvania, where he still serves as an adjunct assistant professor in the School of Medicine, in addition to serving on the staff of the Hebrew University-Hadassah School of Medicine. He is a widely published medical researcher in high ranking peer-reviewed journals. His most recent publication, in Plos On, focused on heat shock proteins (Hsp) which respond when cells are subjected to higher than body temperature and stress. These proteins are important in making cancer cells more vulnerable to therapies and in understanding the signals sent from one cell to another. The paper received enthusiastic review.
He is also working on techniques for defeating infection in critical care patients.
In addition to his medical studies, professor Weiss earned an Executive Masters of Business Administration from the prestigious Trium Global Executive program, which links New York University's Stern School of Business the London School of Economics and Political Science HEC School of Management, Paris. His EMBA project dealt with medical start-ups.
Hadassah members and international supporters will remember the many media interviews with Professor Weiss during the intifada, where the intensive care unit he then headed played a central role in saving terror victims. In addition to Hebrew and English, he is fluent in French and German.
Prof. Weiss will also take charge of surgical services at Hadassah Hospital, in the round building and in the new Caroline and Joseph Gruss surgical wing in the Sarah Wetsman Davidson Hospital Tower which is about to open.
Said Professor Weiss: "My appointment is a major responsibility and I feel honored that you have trusted me with it especially during challenging times. The women of Hadassah have provided us with great infrastructure. Now we must fill it with deeds and accomplishments that require good management. Hadassah must be a center of excellence for Israel and all humankind."
Professor Weiss is married to Shirly Weiss-Degani, a business manager for a multi-national healthcare corporation and the father of two daughters.
