International Human Rights Day 2013

December 10, 2013

Today is International Human Rights Day—65 years since the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted by the United Nations. Eleanor Roosevelt, the U.S. Delegate to the United Nations—and Honorary Chairwoman of Hadassah’s Youth Aliyah—chaired the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, created in 1947, and championed the creation of the declaration.

Hadassah is a vocal advocate for human rights, domestically and around the world, and is committed to the recognition that all women’s rights are human rights.Hadassah’s National Action Center provides members, associates and supporters the opportunity to take action in support of human rights!

International Women’s Rights

Pass the International Violence Against Women Act
One in three women worldwide will experience a form of physical or sexual violence at some point in her lifetime. Urge Congress to support the International Violence Against Women Act!

Urge Senate to Ratify CEDAW
Support the ratification of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). It is time for the U.S. government to show the international community that it stands unequivocally for the rights of women.

Women’s Rights in the United States

In July, Hadassah’s National Board and delegates passed a policy statement calling for new measures to increase the minimum wage, reduce the gender wage gap; protect pregnant workers rights; and create opportunities for earned paid parental, family and sick leave. Hadassah is also a long time advocate for reproductive rights and protections for victims of physical and sexual abuse. All of Hadassah’s policy statements are available online at www.hadassah.org/policystatements.

This week, the Family and Medical Insurance Leave Act (FAMILY) Act will be introduced in Congress. This legislation would institute a federal system for employees to earn paid family and medical leave.Women need support and flexibility so that they do not have to choose between financial stability and their own health and safety, or that of their families.

Urge Congress to co-sponsor and support the FAMILY Act and other women’s rights legislation through the Hadassah National Action Center.
