Advocate for Gun Control in Memory of Sandy Hook

December 13, 2013

Tomorrow is the one-year anniversary of the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, which ended the lives of 20 students and 6 staff members. Since then, more than 11,000 Americans have been murdered by guns. Join coalition partners in today’s interfaith call-in and advocacy day to end gun violence!

In response to the tragic events in Newtown, Hadassah released a statement in support of stronger gun control and reaffirmed its Gun Control policy statements, including a call to reauthorize the ban on assault weapons. In April, Hadassah members, associates and supporters advocated for the Safe Communities, Safe Schools Act--including the bipartisan compromise to expand background checks proposed by Senators Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Pat Toomey (R-PA). Unfortunately, the background check proposal failed to gain the filibuster proof 60 votes and the legislation stalled.

In 2012 alone, 6.6 million guns were purchased without a background check and studies show that states with stricter background checks have lower rates of firearm trafficking, domestic violence fatalities, and gun suicides. In memory of Sandy Hook, urge Congress to support background checks and other gun safety measures today!
