Take Action for Human Trafficking Prevention Month

January 30, 2014

Every day, women and children are forced, defrauded, or coerced into labor or sexual exploitation. In recent years, the United Nations, as well as the United States and Israel have made significant progress towards the elimination of trafficking; however, there is still much work to be done.

January has been designated as National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month, culminating in the annual celebration of National Freedom Day on February 1. Trafficking and its related crimes not only harm the women involved; they also undermine the social, political and economic fabric of the nations where they occur by demeaning women and increasing violence and crime.

Take Action! Join fellow Hadassah advocates from across the country and take a stand against human trafficking.

Urge Congress to pass the Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act. This bi-partisan legislation would increase penalties for traffickers and expand funding for law enforcement training programs and critical victims’ services.

Hadassah’s Trafficking in Women Policy Statement urges all nations to make the elimination of the trafficking of women a priority by strengthening anti-trafficking legislation, sharing information, aggressively prosecuting traffickers and mounting public information campaigns. Hadassah further urges countries to provide safe havens for victims of trafficking and institute a comprehensive range of social services for their rehabilitation. Hadassah Northern New Jersey Region is a member of the New Jersey Coalition Against Human Trafficking, a diverse coalition of over 80 organizations working to end human trafficking in New Jersey, the United States and the world through education, advocacy and assistance to survivors. In preparation for Super Bowl 2014 at the Meadowlands in New Jersey, the Coalition mobilized the community to deter an increase in human trafficking activities that are often associated with large sporting events. Learn more about the Super Bowl campaign, and Hadassah's role in the Human Trafficking Awareness Day proclamation made by the South Orange Board of Trustees.

In November, the Greater Cleveland Chapter of Hadassah presented the program “Human Trafficking: It’s not Just Another Community’s Problem, It’s in OUR Community.” The event, attended by 125 Hadassah and community members, featured an all-star panel that discussed trafficking from the policy, criminal justice, and social service perspectives.
