Hadassah Deeply Concerned about Palestinian Unity Government

Press Release
UPDATE 6/9/2014: Contact your legislators and urge them to review American funding to the Palestinian government.
Encourage your Senators to sign-on to the bipartisan letter to the White House being circulated by Senators Benjamin Cardin (D-MD) and Susan Collins (R-ME). The letter urges President Obama to ensure full compliance with the Palestinian Anti-Terrorism Act of 2006 and to pressure Palestinian President Abbas to return to the negotiating table with Israel and comply with the Quartet principles required for any recognition of a Palestinian government.

Hadassah Deeply Concerned about Palestinian Unity Government

Hadassah joins with the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, of which Hadassah is a member, in expressing disappointment and deep concern at the formation of the Palestinian Authority "unity" government.  We urge Palestinian President Abbas to return to negotiations with Israel, and continue to hope for a future of stability in the region and a peaceful fulfillment of a two-state solution.

See below for the Conference of Presidents full statement.  Hadassah will continue to follow these developments and will provide additional updates when they become available.

Conference of President Leaders' Statement on Palestinian Unity Government

Monday, June 2, 2014, New York, NY -- Statement by Robert G. Sugarman, Chairman, and Malcolm Hoenlein, Executive Vice Chairman, of Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations regarding the announcement of the Palestinian unity government:

“We are disappointed and deeply concerned at the formation of the Palestinian Authority “unity” government. The United States and Israel have made clear that they will not engage with Hamas, a declared terrorist organization that continues to call for the destruction of Israel. We urge the United States and other governments to be vigilant in their judgment of and dealings with the newly declared government. We call on President Abbas to return to the negotiations with Israel and not engage in this charade. United States law prohibits funding to a Palestinian government in which Hamas participates. We, therefore, support the calls by members of Congress from both parties to review US aid to the Palestinian Authority and to assure that the law is appropriately implemented.”

The Conference of Presidents is the central coordinating body representing 50 national Jewish organizations on issues of national and international concern
