Hadassah Members from Atlanta Push Fundraising Goal Over the Top

Genever McBain

(New York, NY – August 13, 2007) – Take a Stand!, Hadassah’s fundraising/advocacy program for young women, reached its initial three-year goal of $1 million in just two years – in  a most unusual, and dramatic way – at Hadassah’s recent national convention held in New York City.

When several young leaders from the Southeastern Region learned that the program was a mere $25,000 short of the three-year goal, they decided to take a stand and raised the shortfall – immediately.  During the first 20 minutes of the convention’s gala banquet, Jaimee Boettcher, Sara Dell, and Esther Panitch, and Diane Fisher, all from the greater metropolitan Atlanta area, and Deborah Deutschmann of Columbia, SC, solicited enough pledges to bring the Take A Stand! total over the $1 million mark  This was met with thunderous applause when it was announced from the podium by then-National President June Walker.

Their inspiration came at a reception earlier in the evening when more than 100 gathered to make a “Toast to Take A Stand!,” commemorating the second anniversary of the launch of the program.  The proceeds of Take A Stand! are dedicated to stem-cell research at the Hadassah Medical Organization in Jerusalem.

Those at the reception were reminded that the initial three-year fundraising goal of $360,000 had been surpassed in the first year of the initiative, and that last year at Hadassah’s national convention in Nashville participants voted unanimously to increase their initial goal to $1 million. By the beginning of this convention, $857,000 had already been raised. Pledges made in the first two days of the three-day convention brought the total to $875,000.

The reception ended with the exhortation to everyone to spread the word about Take A Stand!. In the end, these five members closed the $25,000 gap, not only talking the talk, but walking the walk!
