Hadassah Thanks House Of Representatives And Rep. Eric Cantor For Special Appropriation To Hadassah

Emily North

(New York, NY -- May 05, 2005) -- Hadassah, the Women’s Zionist Organization of America, is extremely pleased that the House of Representatives today voted to approve HR 1268, making emergency supplemental appropriations. According to the House conference report, “the conferees recognize the importance of adequate healthcare for Palestinian women and children…and recommend $2,000,000 to support the healthcare activities of Hadassah, the Women’s Zionist Organization of America.” The inclusion of this funding was due to the efforts of Rep. Eric I. Cantor (R-VA), Chief Deputy Majority Whip. The Senate is expected to act next week. Once both Houses pass the supplemental appropriations, the President is expected to sign the bill into law.

In a statement today, June Walker, National President of Hadassah, said: “We are most gratified that the House of Representatives recognizes the importance and capabilities of our world-renowned hospitals in Israel in providing medical services to all people of the region, and look forward to swift passage by the Senate. This is the second validation of our professional excellence in just as many months. In April we learned that the Hadassah Medical Organization was nominated for the 2005 Nobel Peace Prize for its care and treatment of all patients without regard to religion, nationality or ethnic background.

“We would especially like to thank Rep. Eric I. Cantor for his efforts in introducing this special appropriation into the supplemental bill. He has visited our medical facilities in Jerusalem twice and understands the critical role they play as a bridge to peaceful coexistence with Israel’s Palestinian neighbors.”
