HADASSAH APPLAUDS OUTCOME OF DIPLOMATIC CONFERENCE IN GENEVA
Vote to ratify “Third Protocol” paves way for Magen David Adom’s entry into ICRC
(New York, NY -- December 08, 2005) -- Hadassah, the Women’s Zionist Organization of America, applauded the results of the diplomatic conference concluded last night in Geneva, Switzerland, where signatories of the 1949 Geneva Convention formally recognized the “Red Crystal” for use by member agencies of the International Committee of the Red Cross. The ratification of this third, neutral symbol – in addition to the Red Cross and Red Crescent – is expected to enable Israel’s Magen David Adom to be accepted as a full member of the international federation when the ICRC meets in the near future.
Hadassah has worked diligently to effect the inclusion of MDA in the International Committee of the Red Cross, in conjunction and partnership with the American Red Cross, and in a statement today, June Walker, National President of Hadassah, said:
“We are particularly gratified at the successful conclusion of this important step in the process to right a wrong that has existed since 1949. We understand how important this is because Hadassah’s two major hospitals and many clinics work hand in hand on a daily basis with MDA, and our own doctors from Hadassah Medical Organization have on occasion been excluded from the world health community when politics have been confused with medicine.
“The energies and efforts of the American Red Cross, who had the courage to fight this battle when it wasn’t a glamorous battle to fight, were instrumental in helping the MDA. They risked their own standing in the international community for what we all believe is right, and we congratulate them, above all, for achieving this.”
