HADASSAH ESTABLISHES EMERGENCY FUND TO HELP MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS VOLUNTEER THEIR SERVICES IN SOUTH ASIA
(New York, NY -- January 03, 2005) -- Hadassah, the Women’s Zionist Organization of America, has set up a fund for South Asian tsunami relief. Money donated to Hadassah in the U.S. for this purpose will be used to assist a number of Hadassah staff physicians, nurses and other medical personnel who have volunteered to travel from Israel to Southeast Asia to provide their skilled services to the relief efforts.
“Hadassah members are caring, compassionate citizens of the world, who are deeply troubled by the natural disaster in South Asia,” said June Walker, National President. “They are also extremely devoted to the outstanding medical professionals at our hospitals and will want to enable them to donate their time and energy to this massive relief effort.”
Last week, at the behest of the Israeli Foreign Ministry, three of Hadassah’s top doctors flew to Sri Lanka to assess the situation from the standpoint of trauma medicine and critical care. Briefed by Sri Lankan officials, they determined that relief aid and forensic services were of primary importance to the countries hit by the tragedy. The initial Hadassah trauma team returned home, but since then a number of medical professionals from the hospital have indicated their desire to volunteer their services in South Asia.
