HADASSAH DEEPLY DISAPPOINTED BY PRESIDENTIAL VETO OF STEM CELL LEGISLATION

(New York, NY -- June 20, 2007) -- Hadassah, the Women’s Zionist Organization of America, today expressed profound disappointment at Presidents Bush’s decision to veto legislation that would have advanced stem-cell research.

This is the second time President Bush has vetoed this legislation, despite strong bi-partisan majority support in both houses of Congress.

“We are deeply discouraged by the presidential veto today of this critical legislation. The millions of Americans with chronic, intractable diseases deserve a more activist approach from our government in pursuit of potential cures,” said Hadassah’s National President June Walker. “It is immoral to place limits on potentially life-saving scientific research in order to safeguard ‘potential life.’ However, we are greatly encouraged by recent published research that indicates that skin cells in laboratory mice can be engineered to behave as stem cells, vastly widening the possibilities of seeking cures and relief for disease.”

Hadassah, with 300,000 members in the U.S., is a powerful grassroots voice for Israel, health, and women’s issues, and is the founder and supporter of the Hadassah Medical Organization in Jerusalem. Scientists at its Goldyne Savad Institute of Gene Therapy were among the first in the world to derive embryonic stem cell lines.
