From US to Haifa: Hadassah Solidarity Mission Heads To North

Amanda Doreson

(New York, NY -- August 07, 2006) -- Seventy activists from Hadassah, the Women's Zionist Movement of America, will arrive in Israel tomorrow, August 8, in a powerful statement of solidarity for the Jewish state. Despite the recent attack on Haifa, they will travel directly there, where they will spend the night.

“We want to show solidarity with Israel in general and Haifa in particular,” said Marlene Edith Post, head of the Hadassah Solidarity Mission. “Just as we sent one mission after another during the intifada, we are here now,” said the past National President, already in Israel.

On Tuesday afternoon, the mission members will meet Haifa Mayor Yona Yahav, view areas damaged by Hezbollah katyusha attacks, and visit wounded soldiers and civilians at Rambam Hospital.

“Jewish mothers around the world see these soldiers as our own children,” said Post.

On Tuesday evening, the mission members will take part in a solidarity celebration together with the World Zionist Organization at the Hadassah-Neurim Youth Aliyah Village near Netanya. More than 300 immigrant children from the North are staying at the village, where a special summer camp provides sports and recreation. Minister of Tourism, Isaac Herzog, will address the group.

Later in the three-day visit, the participants will travel to Sderot and meet with Mayor Eli Moyal and local families.

“I couldn't tolerate being so far away from Israel in a time of crisis,” said mission participants Marcie Natan, of New York City and newly elected Hadassah National Treasurer. "The very least we in America can do is to come, fill the hotels, and provide additional resources."

Hadassah, with 300,000 members, is the largest Jewish organization in the Diaspora and the largest women's organization in the United States.
