Hadassah to Receive Advocacy Award From Genetics Policy Institute at Annual Conference at Stanford University

Lee Abramowitz

(New York, NY -- May 18, 2006) -- Hadassah, the Women’s Zionist Organization of America, is the 2006 recipient of the annual National Advocacy Award given by the Genetics Policy Institute (GPI) at its annual policy institute, to be held this year June 9-11 at Stanford University in Palo Alto, CA. Hadassah is receiving the prestigious award for its continued work in advocating for favorable stem cell legislation and funding at both the federal and state level. In Spring 2005, Hadassah mobilized its 300,000-strong membership to participate in SOS: State of Stem Cell, an effort that saw Hadassah delegations visit legislators in all 50 state capitals.

The award will be given within the framework of the Genetics Policy Institute’s second annual "Stem Cell Policy and Advocacy Summit: Empowering the Pro-Cures Coalition" that will feature presentations by Nobel Laureate Dr. Paul Berg, Bob Klein (chair of the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine), Dr. Evan Snyder of the Burnham Institute and James Reston, Jr. (author of "Galileo" and "Fragile Innocence").

The Summit is hosted by the center for Biomedical Ethics at Stanford University and co-chaired by Bernard Siegel, J.D., executive director of the Genetics Policy Institute, and Christopher Thomas Scott, Ph.D., executive director of the Stanford Program in Stem Cells and Society.

According to Siegel, "The National Advocacy Award goes to the organization that has made the greatest impact in promoting awareness of the lifesaving cause of stem cell research. Hadassah has earned the gratitude of patients around the world for its effective leadership on this issue. GPI is pleased to provide Hadassah recognition at this annual summit meeting of the "Pro-Cures" community."

The Genetics Policy Institute's annual Stem Cell Policy and Advocacy Summit is the only nationwide meeting that brings together a diverse gathering of experts and activists from the world of science, law, politics, bioethics, business, public policy and national, state and local activism. The goal of the meeting is to hone the knowledge and skills of the many stakeholders in stem cell research (especially patients), to help overcome political obstacles, and to advance the most promising biomedical research of our time.
