Sean Macdonald, a participant on Young Judaea Year Course 2009-10 is coming to the United States to speak about his participation in Garin Tzedek, a self-organized group of forty Year Course participants who are dedicating their time in Israel to providing support to Darfuri and Sudanese refugees.  Over the past five months, Garin Tzedek has:

  • Renovated and operated daycare centers and nurseries in Arad and Tel Aviv
  • Organized and taught introductory English classes for Sudanese children and adults
  • Advocated to the Arad municipality for basic legal protection for refugees’ tenant rights and legal protection
  • Provided basic first aid and medical support to refugees who do not have medical insurance
  • Educated themselves and their peers about the humanitarian and legal issues surrounding the refugee situation in Israel
  • Raised awareness about the issue in Israel
  • Promoted fund-raising efforts on behalf of the Sudanese refugees with whom they work.  $1,600 has been raised to date and the money is being spent on supplies for the aforementioned projects as well as educational initiatives.

Garin Tzedek represents the most recent innovation of Young Judaea’s mission to engage American-Jewish youth with Zionism and contribute directly to Israel’s fulfillment as a Jewish state built on Jewish values.  Sean will be speaking at Hadassah House (50 West 58 Street, New York) on February 8, 2010 at 7:00 PM.  The evening will include a multi-media presentation and Sean will discuss his insight on what Garin Tzedek has accomplished in Israel and how his experiences shape his identity as a member of the Jewish community and as an advocate for social justice.

Everyone is encouraged to attend.

Partner organizations for this event currently include Makom, Repair the World and the BJENY-SAGES.
