Urge Senate to Pass Paycheck Fairness Act!

This morning Hadassah representatives participated in a webcast on the Paycheck Fairness Act (S. 182) featuring Lilly Ledbetter and U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis. Ledbetter—a national spokeswoman for pay equity—who lost a Supreme Court case against Goodyear Tire in 2007 and subsequently became the namesake for the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act passed later that year.  Once archived, the webcast can be viewed here >>

The Paycheck Fairness Act passed the House in January of 2009, but now sits in a Senate committee waiting to be placed for a vote.  Eighty-four percent of American voters support legislation to help women achieve fair wages1.  With only three weeks until the end of the Congressional Session, we must act now!

For every dollar a man earns, women with comparable education and experience make only 77 cents2—costing the average American woman $700,000 to $2 million in lost wages over a working lifetime. The Paycheck Fairness Act would deter wage discrimination by closing loopholes in the Equal Pay Act and by barring retaliation against workers who disclose their wages to coworkers.

Hadassah, a longtime member of the National Committee on Pay Equity, strongly supports the adoption and strict enforcement of equal pay laws to reduce the wage gap and ensure better economic security for women.  Call your Senators at 1-877-667-6650 and urge them to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act this session!
