Paycheck Fairness Act!

Over the last couple of months, Hadassah’s Advocacy Department has been closely following the Paycheck Fairness Act. Hadassah is a long-time member of the National Committee on Pay Equity and recently co-signed a letter to the Senate to show support for this legislation. Hadassah strongly supports the adoption and strict enforcement of equal pay laws to reduce the wage gap and ensure better economic security for women.

Thanks to the advocacy of Hadassah’s Email Action Network and our partner organizations, the Paycheck Fairness Act is on the move. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) filed a petition, enabling a cloture vote (a vote to end debate) after the Senate reconvenes on November 15. Fifty-nine Senators have pledged their support for this legislation, but sixty votes are required to break cloture (prevent a filibuster). In order to secure that final supporter, advocacy efforts are focusing on Senator Scott Brown from Massachusetts, Senators Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins from Maine, and the winner of special elections in Delaware, Illinois and West Virginia.

Similar legislation has been in Congress for the last 10 years, but it has never been this close to passage before. Many predict that if the legislation does not pass this session, there may not be an opportunity for a vote for another decade. The Paycheck Fairness Act would deter wage discrimination by closing loopholes in the Equal Pay Act and by barring retaliation against workers who disclose their wages to coworkers. Call your Senators at 1-877-667-6650 and urge them to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act this session!
