The gigantic fire that has been waging death and destruction along the Carmel mountain near Haifa is still in full force after more than 30 hours and for the second night. 42 people were killed and 15 injured, all of them were policemen, police officers, fire fighters and members of the Israel Prisons Authority. Some 20,000 people had to evacuate their homes, some 8,650 Acres of one of the most beautiful natural environments in Israel were burnt.
Because of the distance from Jerusalem, and the small number of injuries, Hadassah was not asked to assist until now.
However, we are prepared, as always, to do whatever will be required. We have already made sure that requests for skin grafts will be met immediately. Hadassah is the home of Israel's National Skin Bank. Once the injured people will be stabilized, they will need skin tissues - and we will have what they will need.
The Israel National Skin Bank (INSB) was founded jointly by the Medical Corps of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), the Ministry of Health and the Hadassah Medical Organization in 1986. The INSB prime purpose is to treat burn victims incurred at war or during mass casualty incidences. It supplies cryopreserved human skin allografts to treat burn patients upon request from hospitals/burn units in Israel, free of charge. In 2002 the INSB was certified for ISI 9001-by SGS UK Ltd for “Tissue Banking, Skin Preserved for grafting”.
We cry with the families who lost their loved ones, and we pray for a speedy and complete recovery - Refu'ah Shleimah - of the injured.
