Stem Cell Action Coalition Doubles in Size to 62 Affiliated Organizations

The Genetics Policy Institute (GPI) announced that since its launch in mid-November, the grassroots Stem Cell Action Coalition, has attracted 62 affiliated nonprofit organizations, more than doubling in size.

An initiative organized by GPI, the Coalition aims to foster public awareness about the promise of embryonic stem cell research and its translation into regenerative medicine, promote robust funding of basic research and translational medicine within ethically responsible and scientifically sound guidelines, and vigorously defend this research from unwarranted restrictions.  In addition to covering the critical legal issues at the U.S. federal level, the Coalition places a special focus on challenges at the state level, and serves as a facilitator to coordinate advocacy among all stakeholders.

“We are absolutely delighted at the rapid growth of this campaign,” said Bernard Siegel, founder and chair of the Coalition. “The Coalition illustrates the broad public support for the advancement of embryonic stem cell research and regenerative medicine. This pro-cures community represents a diverse cross section of society, including patient advocacy organizations, medical philanthropies, research institutions, scientific and medical societies, state stem cell coalitions, and international networks.”

The Coalition web site offers information on recent embryonic stem cell advances, and presents the latest news impacting the field. Visitors to the site are invited to join the Coalition and to subscribe for the free biweekly Stem Cell Action newsletter.  The site also provides a tool for sending messages to elected representatives.

The Coalition maintains a growing social network on Twitter @stemcellaction and on Facebook www.facebook.com/stemcellaction.

Cell lines derived from embryonic stem cells serve as a means to understand developmental biology, a field second to none in importance for dissecting the root causes of disease.   As such, these cell lines provide tools for drug
discovery and development of cell therapies for curing a host of disabling and often deadly medical conditions.
